about

Choosing to make an album is a high-risk, high-reward proposition. Abandoning the controlled environment of the studio is a high-wire act where a thousand things can go wrong from one end of the wire to the other. Add a video component to the project and place the band in the middle of the audience and you’re walking that line while carrying two squirming toddlers and next week’s groceries. Good luck. Yet when everything works, as it did on July 7 and 8, 2023 at Cleveland’s BOP STOP club, the results come into being as some kind of miracle. Or in this case, as “Work and Song.” It’s not often that a graduate school project can re-emerge a decade later and grip audiences as these compositions did on those two nights. Still, what spoke to drummer, composer and Alla Boara founder Anthony Taddeo when he first heard Alan Lomax’s Italian field recordings from the 1950s, carried a communicative power that a classroom could not contain. Call it the power of work and song. These compositions, though artfully reimagined and skillfully played by trained musicians, have deep roots in the most basic of human experiences: work (“Almond Sorters” and “U Leva Leva”), romantic longing (“Questa Mattina Me Son Alzato”), separation (“Mamma Mia Dammi Cento Lire”) and communal celebration (“Me Me Ne Fon”). And the sellout audiences on those two July nights felt all of it, transforming BOP STOP into a Calabrian tuna boat, a Sicilian piazza, an ancient ruined church and a Sardinian meadow in turn. There was laughing, crying, and to end it all, a swaying, woozy singalong. It was the blood and truth of an Elena Ferrante novel,
the bemused social observation of a Fellini comedy, the pathos of a crucifix by Cimabue. It was bigger than life and the essence of life itself, italianitá con amore. And that is how the music on “Work and Song” stretches a thread between two continents, binding a distant time to our own in a language few of us understand, a thread that somehow takes us across. When you think about it, that counts as some kind of miracle.
